Catskills Cattery Health Certifications

Always Tested, Always Healthy

All cats in our home are tested and are negative for FIV and FeLV. They also have negative fecal exams. Our adult breeding cats are HCM scanned at 1.5 years of age and every 2 years thereafter per the recommendation of our veterinarian and cardiologist.

We do not routinely test kittens coming out of the home for FIV or FeLV. The tests for these viruses are known to be statistically unreliable — with up to 36% false positives — and vary greatly depending on the manufacturer; additionally, immunizations can cause many harmful side effects and allergies, and these viruses have a less than 3% prevalence in the US.

Catskills Cattery kittens never leave the home, other than for veterinary exams, and are always cared for following recommended protocols for reducing transmission of all infectious diseases; this includes ensuring adequate space for each cat, limiting group sizes, and avoiding co-housing of unrelated kittens.

Please do not test your kitten or have your kitten vaccinated against these viruses.

All Catskill Cattery kittens are wormed and treated for parasites per the recommendations of our veterinarian, and come with a negative fecal exam for worms and parasites; this includes treatment for coccidia and giardia.

Please note:

  • All kittens are susceptible to parasites and worms, so it is recommended that you have your veterinarian see your new kitten as soon as possible, and per our signed agreement.

  • Certain parasites, such as coccidia and giardia, can be transmitted by non-symptomatic cats to kittens, so please refer to your Catskills Cattery Kitty Kare Booklet upon adoption and follow the recommendations for quarantining and easing the transition of your new kitten.
